About Acupuncture

Traditional Acupuncture has been used in the East for over 3000 years.  Acupuncture comes in a variety of styles, such as Five Element, TCM, Auricular, Japanese, Korean, Acupressure and many more.  TCM and Five Element are the most common styles used in the UK, with Japanese Acupuncture gaining popularity.

Traditional Acupuncturists place tiny needles into precise spots throughout the body along routes known as meridians to regulate physiological processes and promote calm.  Modern science has discovered myofascial pathways that trace the meridians documented by early acupuncturists and the concept known as qi seems to overlap with emerging facts about how the body's cells communicate. Treatment is based on a complete consultation, which includes a comprehensive assessment of the patient's health, lifestyle and any other contributing factors such as diet.

What is Five Element Acupuncture?

Five Element Acupuncture was built on a knowledge of the cyclical movement of life energy, commonly known as qi.  Practitioners use strategic points to unblock, build or transfer energy or qi in order to improve physical, mental and emotion health and wellbeing.  Each of the Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water – reflects a particular type of qi energy that is essential to nature's ongoing health and flow.  Diagnosis and treatment are based upon an understanding that each person has a particular relationship with one or two elements which can influence our behavioural patterns and predispose us to certain imbalances or disease.  Practitioners use the patient's colour, sound, odour, and emotion (CSOE) to assess a patient's Constitutional Factor (CF). Diagnosis of CF using these cues allows the practitioner to concentrate on the precise meridians and points connected with the CF. The CF is the first element in an individual to fall out of balance, causing a fundamental disturbance in the patient's energy.  Rather than only treating symptoms, the Five Element practitioner addresses the patient as a whole, which results in a longer-lasting feeling of well-being.

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

TCM looks at functional disharmony within the body and a diagnosis is made though observation of the patient’s tongue and pulses.  According to Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) theory, pain and disease are signs that the body is out of balance.  TCM is particularly effective in treating physical symptoms and pain relief.

The Treatment

Very fine needles are used to access the Acupuncture meridians.  Many patients worry that Acupuncture will be painful.  Most people feel nothing more than a dull ache, a scratch or a tingling sensation.  Although a few points may be more sensitive than others, most people find the treatment experience painless, pleasant and relaxing.

Moxibustion or moxa is the treating by applying gentle heat to acupuncture points using smouldering herbs. Moxa is used to warm the meridians, regulate qi, expel cold and damp, and remove stagnation.

Cupping is a method of stimulating acupuncture points by applying suction cups.  This technique stimulates the area by increasing blood flow and clear stagnation.  Cupping is used for sprains, backache and soft tissue injuries.

Gua sha is a form of massage using a flat edged jade stone.  It is used to increase blood flow and release muscle tension.  Gua sha is frequently used to treat tension headaches, muscle tension and   muscle knots.
